Guidelines for Manuscript Preparation and Submission

Manuscripts must be previously unpublished (in books, journals, or elsewhere) and must concern the fields of Korean studies or comparative and interdisciplinary research related to them.

Authors should in principle be members of IACKS, and publication is limited to once per member per year. Papers by non-members may be published upon recommendation of the editorial board and consent of the board of directors.

3.

Submission deadlines are February 28, June 30, and October 31 — two months before each issue is published.

Manuscripts are submitted through the association's JAMS system (https://iacks.jams.or.kr).

Authors must review and agree to the research ethics pledge and the copyright transfer agreement, and submit the IACKS paper submission form containing both to the association's mailbox (newiacks@empas.com).

A. Research ethics pledge — the author(s) confirm that they understand the definition of research misconduct in Chapter 1, Article 2 of the IACKS Research Ethics Regulations; that the manuscript does not involve fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, improper authorship, duplicate use of material, or conflicts of interest, and that they will accept the measures of the IACKS Research Ethics Committee in case of violation; that they have checked the manuscript's similarity using the KCI similarity check system and revised it where necessary; and that they bear full responsibility for its content.

B. Copyright transfer agreement — if the paper is published in Comparative Korean Studies, the author(s) transfer its copyright, including digital rights, to IACKS; when reusing part of the paper in other work, the author(s) will cite this paper as the source. The corresponding (first) author is authorized to confirm the transfer on behalf of all authors.

Upon submission, authors pay the annual membership fee for the current year and a review fee of KRW 60,000 per paper. Lifetime members (lifetime fee KRW 300,000) are exempt from admission and annual fees and receive a 50% reduction of the review fee.

For accepted papers of up to 25 typeset pages, the publication fee is KRW 100,000 (non-tenure-track) / KRW 150,000 (tenure-track); papers supported by internal or external research grants pay KRW 300,000. Each typeset page beyond 25 incurs an additional KRW 10,000.

Korean-language manuscripts should be about 120 sheets of 200-character manuscript paper; English-language manuscripts about 6,000–8,000 words. Manuscripts in other languages should follow these standards and, in principle, be accompanied by a Korean or English translation (the translator need not be the author).

Manuscripts are organized as: ① title; ② author name(s), affiliation, and position; ③ Korean abstract and keywords; ④ main text; ⑤ references; ⑥ Western-language abstract (with title, author, and affiliation) and keywords. At least five keywords are given for each. For papers in Western or other foreign languages, the Western-language abstract precedes the Korean abstract.

The Korean abstract should be about four sheets of 200-character manuscript paper (including spaces); the Western-language abstract about 200 words. Abstracts of three or more paragraphs are recommended: purpose of the research in the first, a summary in the middle, and the significance of the research in the last. The two abstracts should have the same content.

For papers with two or more authors, the first author and co-authors must be distinguished.

Research funding is not indicated in the submitted manuscript; it is added after acceptance.

12.

Manuscripts are prepared in HWP 2002, MS Word 2003, or later versions.

13.

Foreign-language manuscripts follow the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers.

14.

Korean-language manuscripts follow the conventions below; other matters follow general scholarly practice.

① Section numbering follows the order 1 – (1) – ① – ㉠.

② Foreign words are written in hangul per transcription rules, with the original in parentheses.

③ Articles and works are marked with 「 」; books, journals, magazines, and newspapers with 『 』; quotations with double quotation marks; emphasis with single quotation marks.

④ Footnotes are the rule: books are cited as author, title, publisher, year, page; journal articles as author, title, journal and volume, publisher, year, page; book chapters as author, title, book title, publisher, year, page. Repeated citations use 'author, op. cit., p.' and consecutive repetitions 'ibid., p.' (with Korean equivalents for Korean sources).

⑤ References are ordered Korean, Japanese, Chinese, then other languages, with cited pages indicated.

15.

Given the interdisciplinary character of the journal, citation and reference styles standard in a particular discipline are respected where required.
